12 Months Of Working Towards Better Nutrition – January 2019

Hey Everyone!

We are now one week into 2019, and I’m sure everyone is just getting back into the swing of their routines after the holidays. Halloween through New Years tend to be a time of indulgence for many of us, and even people like me tend to be less motivated as we go through the season change and the holidays. I don’t believe that you need to wait until the New Year to start making better choices, but I do believe it is a natural place to try and make some healthier decisions and habits after the chaos of the last two months.

So what I propose for all those who read my blog and for all my clients that I work with is starting to think about your nutrition going forward as a series of steps. If we can take one thing and work toward 90% adherence for that month, then we can start to engrain that specific thing as a healthy habit into our lifestyle. Then going forward, we would build upon it, still following the goals from before, but adding a new goal each month. By taking it step by step, eating healthier may not seem so overwhelming, and by the end of the year, your nutrition could be better than it ever has before.

So for the month of January, I want everyone to focus on tracking their food. I usually recommend using the app My Fitness Pal for this, as many people are familiar and the app is very user friendly, however, there are a variety of programs out there so feel free to use whatever you like best!

Tracking what you eat is super important because most of us aren’t aware of the amount of calories and macronutrients that we are ingesting and thus, have no idea how it is affecting our body composition. Depending on your height, weight, gender, and age, we all have different needs, and sometimes it can be difficult to understand what those are (My Fitness Pal has it’s own calorie equation for this, but it’s fairly basic, and I don’t believe that it does most people justice). So if you are really interested in what you need to eat to reach your goals, I’d be happy to help with that personally.

However, for the sake of creating a broad goal that everyone can follow for this month, we are just working on simply tracking the food you are already eating to help you see the patterns you are typically establishing and to create the habit so that as we build on to our goals in the future, you can adequately track them.

So start out 2019 right and get to tracking your food! Stay tuned for February’s goal on the first of the month.
